Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird: A Fancasting For A TV Series

“Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ’em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

Atticus Finch To His Children

Atticus Finch (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a father first and a lawyer second. This is the advice he gives to his children when he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee’s 20th century classic novel. Tom Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) is a black man accused of raping a white girl. Through the perspectives of the young Jem (Michael Campion) and Scout Finch (Ruby Barnhill), we see the good, the bad and the ugly sides of Maycomb County. We see the different viewpoints towards race and class in the deep south during 1930s America; the conscience (or lack of) and beating heart of a small southern town brought out into the open. A town steeped in secrets, prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is stung by the righteous ideologies of one man, in a struggle for justice as well as struggle for humanity, even if he is one of the few people in town who has any.

N.B: Francis McDormand will be in the show in occasional voiceovers and in a cameo role in the last episode, after Tom Robinson’s trial. The final scene after he’s shot will be Harper Lee describing the south in the 1930s. She grew up in Alabama amidst the racist ideologies, violence and prejudice. Despite having written the novel, she’ll be given an overview of her childhood and what it was like, including having Truman Capote (Dill) as a neighbour during the summers of her youth. I’d like her to do something quite similar to what Alex Haley did in the 1977 miniseries of Roots, based on the novel of the same name.

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.”
