Game Of Thrones: A Fancasting For The Greyjoy Rebellion

Summary: Six years after Robert had overthrown the Targaryens, Balon Greyjoy declared himself King of the Iron Islands and led a rebellion against the Iron Throne. House Stark, Tully, Lannister and their vassals came to Robert’s aid thwart Balon.

Balon initiated several, early, intelligent strikes which included the burning of the Lannister fleet at anchor, in a sneak attack on Lannisport. This was orchestrated by his brother Euron and executed by another brother, Victarion. This victory gave King Balon freedom to dispatch forces to attack Seaguard led by his son Rodrik. In this assault, Rodrik was cut down by Lord Jason Mallister (Tully bannerman) beneath the walls of Seagard. Jason and his men threw the ironmen back into the sea.

One of the most notable events during the rebellion was at Fair Isle. Robert’s brother, Stannis Baratheon smashed Victarion Greyjoy’s fleet. This allowed Robert to reach the Iron Islands and Stannis will be forever known in the fanbase as Stannis The Mannis. They call him the man who never smiles. I bet he smiled then. Furthermore, he also took Great Wyk in the name of Robert while Ser Barristan Selmy led the assualt on Old Wyk.

“I defeated your uncle Victarion and his Iron Fleet off Fair Isle, the first time your father crowned himself. I held Storm’s End against the power of the Reach for a year, and took Dragonstone from the Targaryens. I smashed Mance Rayder at the Wall, though he had twenty times my numbers. Tell me, turncloak, what battles has the Bastard of Bolton ever won that I should fear him?”

Siege Of Pyke

Pyke was where all the fun was and was led by Robert Baratheon and Lord Eddard Stark. Robert’s forces attacked the southern wall with siege engines, finally breaking the main watchtower and bringing bits of the surrounding wall down as well. Maron Greyjoy, was killed in the breach. The Red Priest, Thoros of Myr was first through the breach wielding that “ridiculous flaming sword” as Jorah says when reminising about the Siege Of Pyke with Ser Barristan Selmy. Jorah Mormont earned his knighthood for his bravery that day as he was one of the first through as well. The castle was taken and Balon was thrust in front of Robert in chains. He eventually bent the knee after some persuasion (losing his head). His last son Theon was sent to Winterfell to be Ned Stark’s ward. If he ever rebelled again, Theon would pay with his life.

Balon Greyjoy: You may take my head but you cannot name me traitor. No Greyjoy ever swore fealty to a Baratheon.

Robert Baratheon: Swear one now or lose that stuubbon head of yours.
