Poetry: Cromwell: Why Are You Such A Person?

A man born of a humble low birth
At the brunt of every lord’s mirth
Cromwell was the son of a farrier
Now, destroying every political barrier

From the battles of Italy and France
Using sword, mace, spear and lance
To the court of the Henry the eighth
With no concept of morality or faith

From Wolsey he learned many things
Like how to break lords and pull strings
Information is valued more than gold
With which, powerful men are controlled

He was Wolsey’s lawyer and legal advisor
Silent and subversive like a sharp incisor
He is not a man who you want as your foe
He will be your ruin and bask in your woe

"Ah! At last. A man born in a more lowly state than myself" says Cardinal Wolsey (Jonathn Pryce) (Wolf Hall, BBC Two)

He used acts of abuse to achieve his means
Whether that be on knights, earls or queens
He assured that Anne lost her highborn head
By beheading, and now she was readily dead

Norfolk was Cromwell’s equal in every manner
A snake, a political animal and secretive planner
There are numerous methods to their madness
And this could be perceived as relative badness

Cromwell rose through the ranks and positions
Making his healthy bond with Henry his mission
He eventually got too big for his spidery boots
And lost his head due to his meek grass-roots

When all that power goes to your head

It’s not surprising that you wind up dead
