Inmate Insight: Know The Suicide Squad In A Better Light

The Joker (Jared Leto)

The Joker is a serial killer, maniac, mad man who dresses up like a clown and commits incredibly violent crimes purely because he’s bored and for the fun of it. He is unpredictable and his criminal acts don’t need a cause. He does them because he can. Well, he has one motivation, a sadistic need to show people the pointlessness of life through pain, suffering and death all for his amusement. He spends most of his time in Arkham Asylum but when he isn’t there he’s terrorizing Gotham City and he is often referred to as Batman’s greatest adversary. Jared Leto has huge boots to fill after Heath Leger’s stellar performance as The Clown Prince in The Dark Knight (2008). Jared Leto is a great actor and I think he is more than up to the challenge of matching the performance standard of Leger. Heath played the anarchist who thrived on chaos. Leto will play the psychopath.

The Joker may be a harmless trickster in one second but a brutal mass murderer in the next. He has no problem in killing Robin or incapacitating heroes like Batgirl. He has no motive. It’s all down to how he’s feeling in the second.

Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney)

It’s all in the name. He’s an Australian thug that uses high-tech boomerangs to commit crimes. He featured in CW’s Arrow when he broke into A.R.G.U.S. HQ. This was one of two parts in the Arrow/Flash crossover event. He was also a member of The Rogues.

Enchantress (Cara Delevingne)

Enchantress is a very powerful but also a psychologically unhinged witch who has been a hero and a villain. Her alter ego is June Moone, but she becomes evil when taken over by the Enchantress entity. A bit like Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde.

Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman)

No cool codename for him. He’s the leader of The Suicide Squad starting his career as a fighter pilot before his whole unit was wiped out. Flag then went to work under Amanda Waller (Viola Davis)

Deadshot (Will Smith)

Floyd Lawton AKA Deadshot is a hired killer who will kill anyone for the right price. He does this because he has a suicidal death wish but also works very hard for his ex-wife and his daughter.

Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje)

Waylon Jones AKA Killer Croc is a notorious enemy of the Batman. He has incredibly enhanced strength and a reptilian-like body. Due to genetic experimentation, he has become more animalistic and reptilian over time. Despite his brutal viciousness and heightened reflexes, his animalistic mindset has reduced his intelligence.

I found out recently that the same actor plays Malko who takes Tyrion Lannister & Jorah Mormont hostage in Game Of Thrones.

“The dwarf lives until we find a cock merchant”

El Diablo (Jay Hernandez)

Chato Sanatan is an ex-criminal who has the ability to manipulate fire.

Katana (Karen Fukuhara)

She is a badass sword-wielding, japanese warrior. Her sword is a blade that absorbs the essence of those she kills. She took it from the man who murdered her family in a duel. Katana also featured in Arrow.

Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)

She’s what the Joker would be like if he were female. She’s his partner in crime and his girlfriend. She was a psychiatrist in Arkham Asylum where she was assigned to The Joker and fell in love with him. She adopted the name Harley Quinn based off a harlequin and her name, Harleen Quinzel. Her weapons of choice are a giant mallet or a baseball bat. She’s just as crazy as The Joker but more playful with her craziness.

What I love about DC but also the squad in general is just how serious and gritty it is. Psychopaths, sociopaths. People with serious mental issues are brought together to form Task Force X and do some good. They’re a team of villains who the government use to do their dirty work. If the mission goes wrong. they can deny all responsibility and blame it on the villains. The public would be none the wiser. There are so many billionaires on the planet. Why has nobody become Batman yet? DC politically critique the government and so do Marvel. I remember in Iron Man when Tony says to the press

“I saw young Americans killed by the very weapons I created to defend them and protect them. And I saw that I had become part of a system that is comfortable with zero-accountability”.

Tony Stark Talking To The Press

Does this sound familiar? We are living this now. We are part of this system. The authorities and governments do this on a regular basis. Back to the Suicide Squad. It’s basically a movie about some super villains who are trying to rehabilitate themselves by doing good with the promise of some time knocked off their prison sentences. This will be the third movie of phase one of the DCCU. The first being Man Of Steel (2013), the second being Batman VS Superman Dawn Of Justice (March 2016) and third being as I mentioned. After seeing the trailers for both Dawn Of Justice and The Suicide Squad, I am truly hyped for the DCCU.
